Biography
Charles Dame was born in 1938 in Colburn, Colorado. His Family lived and worked all over the west before eventually settling down in 1951 in Del Norte County, a coastal California county with deep forests. This is where his father, a carpenter and rancher, helped build two large local saw mills.
Charlie discovered the art of wood turning in a high school shop class, and loved working with beautiful burl. After school he earned his living by truck driving, hauling timber and wood chips at night. Night work freed him to follow his desire to be a wood turner during the day.
As his skill and reputation grew as a master wood turner, Charlie then left truck driving and devoted all his time to his hobby. This has been his passion for 38 years and he has been selling his work at local craft shows and various businesses along the Avenue of the Giants, Muir Woods National Monument and a variety of spots in Northern and Southern California.
With the encouragement from his wife Beverly, he began to turn bowls with the natural edge top, which became widely popular with the public. Once these natural edge bowls were seen by local turners, many have tried to copy his work , few have mastered this craft. Charlie has made and sold over 10,000 pieces throughout his lifetime and now feels it is time for some new online exposure, allowing many more people to view and purchase his one of a kind pieces.
His exclusive and vast knowledge of the redwood forest affords him the opportunity to acquire the best wood available, making each piece unique and beautiful. His pieces reflect the woods natural defects and offer a little bit of the Pacific Coastal forest in their beautiful forms.
